East and West: Worlds of Fashion

A Woman walking in the market
Los Angeles is known as one of the biggest fashion capitals in the world. Dressing differently can either get you praise or criticism and there is a very fine line between being original or just plain “weird.” Having the opportunity to visit Singapore has exemplified how local culture influences attire across the globe.

While staying in Singapore I have realized that people here are more willing to wear what they want and aren’t worried about going against the grain. There are a lot more individualistic looks present in Singapore that allow people to show their personalities. In Los Angeles there are trends that become popular for several months and then fade, in Singapore people seem to wear what is comfortable and suits them.

Modeling is very popular among women in Singapore. Hired models are seen walking around with a camera crew, posing for pictures with different traditional landscapes in the background. Every day people also like to pose while having their picture taken, almost as if they are pretending to be a model.

One of the most fascinating parts of Singapore is the traditional clothing. Although some women still wear the traditional long gowns, some women take what would be a traditional outfit and make it into something modern  and wearable.

Living in America, trends come and go, but in Singapore they seem to stay around longer. People make outfits their own to fit their personality and how they are feeling that day. It is refreshing and fun to walk around and see so many different styles that are all accepted.

  1. Rachel -- thanks for checking in from Singapore. In these images, all of the skirts are pretty short. Is it warm there?

  2. I think it is so interesting to see how people who come from different countries and cultures dress. It is really a reflection of our mindset as Americans, I think. For us (whether we were born here or not), it is important to fit in, to be "Americanized". Our fashion-sense reflects that. We wear what the trends tell us to because we want to look like everyone else. However, it seems that in other countries, like Singapore, individualism is highly valued. Being different is important and being able to express yourself seems to be very acceptable. While Americans may claim to have the same feelings and want the same thing for our society, we have yet to see these ideas come to life.

  3. Looking at this I would think those people have a lot of self-confidence. That is really awesome how they are so comfortable with themselves and do not have one set trend. I often find it hard to keep up with the latest trends. Just as I buy the latest boots suddenly the type of shoe that everyone is wearing changes. I wonder what their entertainment is like? I feel like as American's we are influenced so much by our celebrities and our obsession to be like them. I know you wrote they had models so I wonder if those models set any trends. Maybe that is where celebrities get their fashion trends. They are worldly travelers and set new trends that have to come from somewhere.

  4. It was definitely hot and humid when I was in Singapore which is why the clothing was so short! It seemed as though styles in fashion there were form a while ago here so either they are behind or styles last a lot longer in society which would be nice.

  5. I'm diggin' these photos Rach! It seems as though it's so ordinary for people to dress like this in Singapore. I feel as though in the states, people would get weird looks, depending on the area they're in at time, however, it seems so quirky, in a semi-good way.

Personally, I wouldn't dress like this, with the exception of that outfit in the center on your last photoset. It reminds me of how diverse people are, which is great. Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves and they are definitely not afraid to show it.

I also like the part where you mentioned modeling. From what you said, it seems as though people feel more comfortable to do whatever they want to do, and in turn, that gives them a bigger sense of confidence as well!

  6. I loved how you compared both East and West fashion. My roommate is from Korea and she has been pretty influential in my fashion. She is always encouraging me to think outside of the box because that is how people approach fashion where she's from as well. Great job!
