The Best Seasonal Goods This Fall

When the mornings start to become chillier and the days become shorter, that’s when we know fall is definitely here. With the fall season come cozy evenings in with movie nights, scaldingly hot coffee mornings, loose knit tops, and yes, all the shades of orange, brown, and red please! As this is the pre-Thanksgiving season, we also start to see a lot of our favorite turkey-themed holiday flavors such as pumpkin spice lattes and cranberry cookies in stores. This is a time when many of our beloved bakeries and pastry shops get creative with their seasonal menus. To help you navigate this crazy cake-filled season, here are some of the holiday items currently available at some of LA’s favorite dessert shops!

1. Sprinkles

Sprinkles is a widely popular cupcake shop in Southern California. With various locations across the state, it’s no wonder it's become a staple. To kick-off the Thanksgiving spirit, Sprinkles is now offering its Limited Time Offerings menu where you can find two new holiday-inspired cupcakes. Its first offering this season is a pumpkin cupcake which is made of a pumpkin cake with hints of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg accompanied by a cinnamon cream cheese frosting. Its second offering is a pumpkin spice latte cupcake which consists of a marshmallow-filled pumpkin cake and a Cuban coffee frosting.

2. SusieCakes

It’s safe to say that SusieCakes was fully prepared for this holiday season. With a ‘Halloween’ titled section on its website dedicated to seasonal cakes and at-home kits, this cake shop has something for everyone. On its seasonal menu, you can now find a huge selection of items ranging from Halloween frosted sugar cookies to a black SusieKitty decorated cake. What’s more, SusieCakes is all for sprinkling some pop-culture into the mix with its Halloween Barbie cake.

3. Sidecar

Sidecar holds a special place in many’s breakfast routines, especially with its Basil Eggs Benedict doughnut that runs out within 30 minutes of opening. This doughnut shop is known for its adventurously flavored desserts ranging from a maple and bacon doughnut to a butter and salt doughnut. To spread the holiday love, Sidecar has added two new seasonal flavors: a passion fruit pavlova doughnut and a vegan huckleberry peanut butter drizzle doughnut.

4. Milk Jar Cookies

This cookie shop is certainly a hidden gem! As Milk Jar Cookies recently expanded to a second location, its popularity has certainly grown. Now that Thanksgiving approaches, Milk Jar Cookies is gearing up for a busy holiday season. In preparation of this, the cookie shop on Wilshire has introduced a new cookie this fall. Its new waffle cookie is made from maple dough and stuffed to the brim with chunks of toasted waffles.

5. The Pie Hole

Lastly, you can't forget the pumpkin pie! Sadly, The Pie Hole has not yet announced a seasonal menu but it’s still deserving of a notable mention in this list. No one does pies like this pie shop and luckily The Pie Hole offers a classic selection of pies year-round. Its menu includes a s’mores pie and pumpkin pie to satisfy all your Thanksgiving festivity needs this holiday season.

Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 Collections to Look Out for This Upcoming Year

In the midst of Fashion Week and fashion season, it can be overwhelming with how many new collections are being showcased. A new era of fashion is on the way, referencing past generations of styles, experimenting with unconventional materials, and introducing a new avenue for fashion. Here are three outstanding collections that hit the runway this past New York Fashion Week.

DION LEE

Known for his high-end ravewear, Dion Lee plays with a new identity for his SS24 collection.

The "industrial experimentation" is what Lee describes in his new collection. On the runway, models walk down in utility wear, utilizing materials and textures of wire, metal, denim, and leather to hit the nail on the theme. Crowd favorites were the white corset bodysuit paired with a wrench belt, the oversized blazers, and an orange wire that literally plugs into the back of the model's pants.

SAMI MIRO VINTAGE

Ethically made in Los Angeles, Sami Miro Vintage redesigns a new and better avenue of fashion. Self-taught Sami Miro uses natural resources to design her clothes, moving toward a conscious fashion industry.

The idea to upcycle stemmed from Miro's childhood of being bullied for wearing vintage clothing or thrift shopping. Back then, it was looked down on and associated with being poor. She changes this narrative by acknowledging the uniqueness of each vintage item.

Miro is one of many who are paving the way for a sustainable future for fashion.

GUCCI

Sabato De Sarno brings back Gucci's elegance and refined style in his debut as the brand's new Creative Director.

As maximalist Alessandro Michele departs from the brand, De Sarno brings back a contemporary angle to modern luxury. De Sarno is an industry veteran. He has worked for Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, and Prada.

De Sarno titled this new collection "Ancora." Ancora in Italian means again, " I want people to fall in love with Gucci ancora," said De Sarno. The collection has a fresh look, chic and sophisticated, foreshadowing a reboot for the brand and De Sarno.

Navigating the Last Year of College

Navigating the final year of your undergrad degree can be a tough one, for some it’s a breeze but for most, it’s a constant game of catch-up. Here are 5 tips in no particular order to make that year a little less turbulent.

1.     Don’t get overwhelmed – find an outlet.

This is easier said, I know, but from personal experience, I can say it works. For those who already have one and those who might not have one yet, it's important to remember that this outlet should be a positive one. It would be ill-advised to pick up a habit that is not helping you towards your goals – counterproductivity is a big no.

2.     Make a list of daily and weekly tasks.

A strategy as old as time, make a list! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, breaking tasks down in a list helps with organizing your thoughts. Lists can be used daily or weekly! Lists could be written down on paper or you can use a smartphone application. I’ve found using an app to be more helpful because of the notification features and the ability to have it available at any given time. Additionally, having a digital copy means you don’t have to worry about losing paper. One of my favorite apps that can be downloaded through the Apple app store is TickTick. TickTick has prioritization features along with an easy-to-use format. The app is free to download but a paid subscription is also available for additional features.

3.     Lean on friends.

Sometimes all you need is someone to lean on. It's important to have individuals around you can trust in trying times. No one can help you if you don’t ask, friends can offer valuable advice if they have gone or are going through similar situations.

4.     Procrastination is your enemy.

Save yourself the stress and get it done early. Getting things done ahead of time not only prevents unnecessary stress but you’ll also have more time available to do things in tip 1. Procrastination has real-world consequences, waiting till the last minute could cost you months of work or even hurt your wallet. Save yourself time and money, you’ll feel better at the end of it. Again, It’s easier said than done but nothing good comes easy.

5.     Perspective, perspective, perspective – love the process.

Here’s a cliché for you, look at the glass half full not half empty. Most of us won't go through this time again unless we’re pursuing a second bachelor's or a secondary degree. Enjoy this time, and embrace the craziness because it’s going to be worth it, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! Think of another time in your life when you might have felt that your goal was unobtainable but ultimately you accomplished it. You got through it then and you will do it again!

Best of luck 👍,

My Favorite Coffee Shops in Orange County

Orange County, California, is a place where endless beaches, vibrant communities, and a laid-back lifestyle come together to create an atmosphere that's nothing short of captivating. And for those who share a deep passion for the rich, aromatic elixir known as coffee, Orange County is also a hidden haven waiting to be explored. Whether you're a dedicated caffeine connoisseur or simply someone seeking a cozy spot to unwind and finish some assignments, this sunny slice of Southern California has something exceptional in store for you.

In the quest for the perfect blend of good vibes, good coffee, and yummy food, OC's coffee culture offers a delightful blend of specialty brews, unique settings, and a community of coffee enthusiasts who take their love for the science seriously. From the bustling streets of Costa Mesa to the serene vibes of Laguna Beach and the quaint corners of Anaheim, the coffee scene here is as diverse as the county itself.

Join me on a journey as we delve deep into the heart of OC, uncovering the hidden gems and local favorites that make this region a true coffee lover's paradise. Whether you're a local looking for your daily caffeine fix or a visitor seeking a taste of the SoCal coffee scene, this guide will help you navigate the best coffee shops Orange County has to offer. Prepare to be enchanted by the aromas, flavors, and stories brewing in this delightful corner of California, where every cup tells a tale and every sip is a sensory adventure.

Hola Adios

The first shop on the roster is Hola Adios. This spot has two different locations, one in Costa Mesa and another in Old Town Tustin.

Hola Adios is known for their delicious coffee and fun food menu. Each location has a different food menu; Costa Mesa is known for their breakfast burritos and pacos (pancake tacos) and the Tustin location has a mix of biscuit sandwiches and toasts.

Food: 9/10 - A bit pricey

Drinks: 10/10 - I have NEVER had a bad latte here!

Study-ability: 5/10 - They have Wi-Fi, but it's always so crowded that it can be difficult to get work done.

Coffee Dose

Another popular shop is Coffee Dose in Costa Mesa. Coffee Dose has a few other locations, but I feel like this is the best one to talk about because it's their flagship location. AKA full food menu, cocktails, and ample seating.

This coffee shop is known for their silly sayings on cups and their specialty RX lattes. The inside is a stunning pink and green retro vibe and the music is always fun. It's a perfect Instagrammable location to get the group together and hit up. Fair warning, the line can get crazy long so be prepared to wait a little bit!

Food: 10/10 - The food is amazing and I think it's reasonably priced for what you get!

Drinks: 10/10 - Their roast is a dark chocolate and fruity exotic blend. They also have almond milk, raw almond milk, and oat milk as milk substitutes!

Study-ability: 0/10 - NO Wi-Fi here and it can get super loud!

NUDAE Coffee

NUDAE is a relatively new coffee shop as they only opened up earlier this year in 2023. However, their seasonal lattes are amazing and I think they quality for the BEST breakfast burrito in Orange County. The have the BEST staff and the cutest minimalist interior. I highly recommend the coconut caramel latte.

Food: 8/10 - I have only tried a few of their pastries and their breakfast burrito, but I stand by the breakfast burrito being my favorite one in town.

Drinks: 7/10 - The seasonal lattes are delicious but their vanilla latte is fantastic.

Study-ability: 10/10 - They have Wi-Fi, perfect round tables for homework and textbooks, and a peaceful environment.

My Fall Recommendations: Movies and Music!

Unless you’re like me who declared it fall the second August was over, September 23rd marks the first official day of fall! Fall has always been my favorite season. Pumpkin spice lattes, crunchy leaves, sweater weather, and most of all: the movies and music! Having a solid fall movie selection and playlist is an absolute necessity during this time. There is no better way to spend the season than cozying up in bed with a cup of some pumpkin-flavored concoction you found on Tik-Tok and a good fall movie or soundtrack playing in the background.

Here is a list I have compiled with my selection of must-watch fall movies:

  1. Practical Magic (1998)

Starting off strong with Practical Magic! A tale of girlhood, sisters, romance, and magic. This fantasy film tells the story of two cursed witch sisters, Sally and Gillian, who choose to live their lives in different ways. Sally suppresses her powers, wanting a normal life. While Gillian embraces her life as a witch, leading her to a life of mischief. The fashion and setting of the film automatically places you into a fall mood.

  1. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

This New York rom-com and the original enemies-to-lovers is a classic autumnal movie! This timeless movie uncovers the relationship between Harry and Sally as it evolves throughout the years. The film explores themes of self-growth, friendship and true love. The fall scenery of this movie is unbeatable. The fashion, walks through the park and the orange foliage are everything.

  1. Notting Hill (1999)

Notting Hill follows the story of charming bookstore owner William Thacker whose life takes an unexpected turn when he ends up dating world-famous actress, Anna Scott. There is something about London as the backdrop of the film that makes it the best for fall. The quaint bookshops and cozy apartments match perfectly with the vibes of the season.

  1. Stuck in Love (2012)

Stuck in Love begins during a Thanksgiving dinner with the Borgens. Ever since the divorce between Willian Borgens and his ex-wife, Erica, the family has struggled with their perceptions of love. The family learns how to embrace the complexity and beauty of love for all it is. The rainy scenes, holiday gatherings and warmth of the familial scenes makes it perfect for the fall.

  1. Little Women (2019)

Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, this coming-of-age film explores the lives of the four March sisters, Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth. This heartwarming movie tells the story of each sister navigating their individual paths in life full of obstacles and dreams. This movie captures the warmth and comfort we all need during this time.

  1. Twilight Saga (2008-2012)

Finally, the cinematic perfection that is, the Twilight Saga. Based on the books by Stephanie Myers, Twilight follows an ordinary girl, Bella Swan, who falls in love with a mysterious boy, named Edward Cullen, at her new school. His secretive nature turns out to be that he is indeed hiding a huge secret, he’s a vampire. The soundtrack in all the movies is superior, plus is set in Forks, Washington which encapsulates the angsty, gloomy autumn we love.

Now for the list of my current favorite songs for fall:

  1. Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers

  2. Funeral - Phoebe Bridgers

  3. Someone To Stay - Vancouver Sleep Clinic

  4. Still With You - Jungkook

  5. for lovers who hesitate - JANNABI

  6. Roslyn - Bon Iver, St. Vincent

  7. Will I See You Again? - Thee Sacred Souls

  8. Why Do I Cry - Margo Guryan

  9. Lacy - Olivia Rodrigo

  10. Where do we go now? - Gracie Abrams

  11. All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) - Taylor Swift

  12. Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer

  13. No Surprises - Radiohead

  14. There She Goes - The La’s

  15. Home - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zone

These are only a few to name, but I am always looking for more recommendations. Please comment your favorite songs and movies that you enjoy during this wonderful season!

Stay Motivated During Daylight Savings

If you're anything like me, when daylight saving time rolls around, you are in in bed by 6 p.m. and lack the motivation to get going in the morning when the wintertime sun sleeps in. By making small changes to my routine each morning, I found that I was able to get more out of my day, and train my brain to push through those wintertime blues. Seasonal depression is a real thing and it is important to take care of your mental health with winter creeping up.

The first important habit to create in winter, when wanting to get the most out of your day, is getting out of bed and get moving first thing in the morning. The morning is the perfect time to get outside and exercise. When your start your day with a walk, run, or a stretch, your mind is more sharp and your body releases endorphins to give you energy. After sweating it out in the morning, you will feel energized and ready to take on the day.

The second way to stay motivated in winter is to set goals for yourself. I did this by writing five things I wanted to accomplish during the semester on a whiteboard in my room. I kept it up all semester, checking off my goals as I went. By setting goals or writing yourself a to-do list, you are able to be reminded of your goals each and everyday. These goals can be as small as getting a load of laundry done or as big as passing that class you have been worried about all semester. There is something about having a physical list that helps you stay on task and focused on what you want to achieve.

Next, it is important to do activities that bring you joy. In summer, it is easy to find the time to practice your hobbies or take a day to relax at the beach, but having to balance work and school in winter can make this difficult. Each day you should be able to set aside some time to do something that inspires you or brings you joy. For me, I set aside an hour each day to get a coffee and journal at the beach. By taking this time for myself, it allows me to feel at peace with my busy schedule and know that I got to do something for myself, which makes me motivated to finish my day strong. Self-care is important, and you deserve to set aside time for it each day.

The final way to stay motivated during the cold season is to give yourself grace. Just because you need a day to rest does not mean that you failed at your goal to stay motivated. Understand that each day is a new day to accomplish your goals. Productivity should not be a race. The winter months are difficult for most to stay on task and find the motivation to be productive, but giving yourself grace and time to find that motivation is ok.

With winter in the near future, we must be kind to ourselves. Staying motivated can be difficult but by following these easy habits, your goals are not too far out of reach. Creating healthy habits and a healthy mindset towards productivity can make a great difference in your experience with finding motivation.

Hall of Fame Voices in Rock N' Roll

In the rich history of rock and roll, two iconic voices stand out as pillars of musical brilliance; Roger Waters and Robert Plant. While both have left an incredible mark on the genre, their contributions can be seen as different in style, approach, and impact.

Roger Waters: Creative Music Design

Roger Waters, best known as the creative force behind Pink Floyd, is a masterful songwriter and bassist. His contributions to the world of rock transcend mere musicality; they delve into the realm of conceptual storytelling. Waters is the architect of some of the most celebrated rock operas, including "The Wall" and "The Dark Side of the Moon." His lyrical prowess, coupled with a distinctive voice, crafts narratives that explore the human psyche and societal reflections. Waters' ability to fuse progressive rock with philosophical depth distinguishes him as a luminary in the world of music.

Robert Plant: The Enigmatic Voice of Led Zeppelin

On the other side of the spectrum stands Robert Plant, the enigmatic frontman of Led Zeppelin. Plant's vocal prowess is a force of nature, capable of delivering soulful blues, haunting ballads, and primal screams with equal finesse. His collaboration with Jimmy Page in Led Zeppelin birthed timeless classics like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love." Plant's distinct voice often likened to a wailing banshee, became the sonic signature of an era. His ability to seamlessly weave between genres showcases a versatility that sets him apart as one of rock's most influential vocalists.

Comparative Analysis: Style and Impact

Waters and Plant, though distinct in their styles, share a common thread of shaping the rock landscape. Waters' conceptual approach and lyrical depth have left an enduring legacy, influencing subsequent generations of progressive and alternative rock musicians. His work with Pink Floyd remains a cornerstone of the genre's evolution.

In contrast, Robert Plant's vocal range and charismatic stage presence set a standard for rock frontmen. Led Zeppelin's fusion of blues, folk, and hard rock under Plant's guidance created a sonic palette that continues to resonate across genres.

While Waters' impact lies in the intellectual and emotional realms, Plant's influence is visceral, rooted in the raw energy of performance. Both artists, in their own right, have contributed significantly to the ever-evolving narrative of rock and roll. Whether it's Waters' introspective musings or Plant's primal vocal expressions, the legacies of these two artists stand as pillars in the pantheon of rock greatness.
