Stay Safe and Stay Cool

Summer is approaching and it is the best time to go out in the sun and enjoy the water at our favorite beaches here in Southern California. It is important to make sure we have our essentials with us and know what to bring for a day at the beach.

Here is a list of 10 beach essentials you should have with you at the beach:

1. Sunscreen: The first thing to always bring with you when the sun is out or there is a slight overcast is sunscreen. Protection from the sun with sunscreen is the most important item on the list to bring to the beach to avoid UV rays in order to prevent skin cancer and sunburns. It is important that although we want to get our tan on, that we do also apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 which helps to block 97% of the sun’s UVB rays. Make sure to apply sunscreen all over uncovered areas such as the face, lips, and hairline where there is any open areas.

2. Water: Drinking water is super important while being out in the sun. Sunny days at the beach are the best but it is important to make sure beach goers drink water before heading out to the beach as well as during their time at the beach. Staying hydrated is key to help avoid dehydration. Try bringing water in a fun shaped cup to help make drinking water more enjoyable and as a reminder to stay hydrated.

3. Beach Bag: Next on our list for a day at the beach is to bring a beach bag! Bringing a beach bag to the beach is important to have in order to hold our essentials in one plce for everyone to have their items at hand. It is important to bring a beach bag to make sure we keep our things together and that we leave no mess in order to keep our beaches clean.

4. Hat: Wearing a hat is another necessity along with sunscreen to bring to the beach. A hat can help provide a lot of protection, especially towards the older folks who are at higher risks of cancer which will help them keep their head and scalp away from the sun. Wearing a hat will also help avoid heat exaustion and help keep sunburns away.

5. Sandals: Footwear is important when coming to the beach. Sandals are great footwear to help stay above the hot sand but still get sun between your toes. Bring your favorite pair of flip flops to have easy access getting out of them and into the water.

6. Swimwear: The beach is the best place to enjoy a day out in the sun and get a great tan in your favorite swimwear. Beaches are sandy and the water can be rocky sometimes for our favorite activities, so it is important to bring a rash guard or board shorts as added protection to enjoy your favorite water tricks on the water.

7. Umbrella: Having shade is crucial when it comes to keeping the uvs away or to help keep the sun away from our bodies, and umbrellas are a great essentials to have at the beach for our older folks and younger children who need the most protection.

8. Portable Speaker (Music): Life is a bit more fun when you have your favorite songs playing at the bach. Bring a portable speaker and enjoy your favorite tunes out loud whether you are laying out or riding your cruiser. Music is what makes people feel good and helps bring people together. Entertainment is important to have when you are with your friends or family to help keep the mood lively.

9. Towel: Make sure to not forget your towel and bring one with you to help dry off at the beach after a dip in the water. Having a towel works in two ways such as being used to sun bathe on as well as dry our bodies to head out and enjoy the next beach activity.

10. Snacks: As the sun hits our bodies and we are in and out of the water, snacks are a big craving. Bring snacks such as your favorite fruits such as berries or bananas, or even granola bars, veggies, or chips to help keep the body filled with nutritional foods.

While being in the sun on a day out at the beach, make sure to have your beach essentials ready for a day of fun!

  2. Hey Gia, you have great advice on this blog. I tend to never use sun screen when I go to the beach, I should start though.
