April Fool's Day is a time for laughter, jokes, and of course pranks! Many companies have taken advantage of this holiday to create elaborate pranks that leave their customers in a pickle. Today, we will explore some of the most famous pranks that brands have played on their customers on April Fool's Day.
Google is known for its April Fool's Day pranks, and one of its most famous pranks was the introduction of Google Nose in 2013. The prank claimed that users could search for smells, and Google would provide a corresponding scent. The prank included a fake video and a search bar that prompted users to "smell" their results. Although it was just a joke, the prank showed how far Google was willing to go to entertain its users.
In 2014, Google played another prank, this time with its Google Maps service. The company released a video promoting a new feature called "Pokemon Challenge," which invited users to catch Pokemon on Google Maps. The prank was so popular that Google eventually released a real mobile game called "Pokemon Go" in 2016.
In 2015, Netflix played a prank on its users by announcing a fake documentary called "Rotisserie Chicken." The "documentary" was a 73-minute video of a chicken cooking on a rotisserie, with occasional commentary and music. Although it wasn't a real documentary, it was a hit with Netflix users and many decided to watch the whole thing with full enjoyment.
In 2016, T-Mobile played a prank on its customers by announcing a new feature called "Binge On Up." The feature claimed to let users stream unlimited video content, but at a lower quality, so that users could watch more videos. The prank was so popular that T-Mobile actually launched a similar feature called "Binge On" later that year.
In 2017, Burger King played a prank on its customers by releasing a commercial that claimed the Whopper burger was now available in "chocolate." The ad showed people biting into a Whopper burger that had a chocolate bun and chocolate sauce. Although it was just a joke, the ad generated a lot of buzz and was shared widely on social media.
In 2018, Elon Musk played a prank on Twitter by changing his name to "Elon Tusk" and tweeting out a photoshopped image of an elephant with a Tesla logo on it. The prank caused a lot of speculation about what Musk was up to, but it turned out to be just a harmless joke.
In 2019, Google played another prank, this time with its Gmail service. The company released a fake feature called "Google Tulip," which claimed to let users communicate with their plants. The prank included a fake video and a search bar that prompted users to "talk" to their plants. Although it wasn't a real feature, the prank was a hit with Google users.
In 2020, BMW played a prank on its customers by releasing a fake commercial for the BMW iNEXT, which claimed to have a "shy tech" feature that allowed the car to hide its features when someone was looking at it. The ad showed the car's dashboard and controls disappearing when someone walked up to the car. Although it wasn't a real feature, the ad was a hit with BMW fans.
In 2021, Burger King played another prank, this time with its "Impossible Whopper" burger. The company announced a new "Impossible Croissan'wich," which claimed to have the same meatless patty as the Impossible Whopper, but on a croissant instead of a bun. The prank was so popular that Burger King actually launched a similar sandwich later that year.
In conclusion, April Fool's Day is a time for fun and laughter, and many brands have taken advantage of that. Going through the years and seeing all of these pranks, we can see there is one thing in common, these April Fool's Day pranks are a hit!
This was a fun read. I didn't know there were so many companies that have participated in April Fool's. It was really interesting to learn about Pokemon Go.
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing, haha! I love when companies do this.
ReplyDeleteThe chocolate Whopper deserves jail time. It's funny because I'm sure people really believed these fake products at the time. I'm super gullible myself, so I most likely would've been one of those people.
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh and was very fun to read!
