Style vs. Fashion

With trends and brands constantly changing and quickly trying to be the next big thing, it becomes harder to stand out as someone with a unique style, something different than the rest. A way people like to individualize their looks is through fashion and style. However, many do not know the difference.

Fashion depends more on the pieces and where one buys them from. Usually, fashion is related to designer brands like Rick Owens or Maison Margiela; any brand already has a defined aesthetic. When thinking of Gucci, for example, a specific look comes to mind, especially their use of monograms. Brands also usually follow trends. Currently, there is a trend with "cores" like balletcore and gorpcore, which makes a look more specific in the pieces one puts together to create a full outfit.

Style is more of a vibe; someone's form of attire that reflects their persona. There can be many categories of style, including common ones such as streetwear, vintage, preppy, casual and luxurious. But personal style goes a long way and eventually stands out as unique to each person. That being said, it doesn’t matter where one shops for items. It could be from designer brands to thrift shopping, and mixing the pieces makes for a great outfit!

The question arises of whether is it best to invest in fashion or in one's personal style.

  1. I love this!! I agree that it's hard to invest in one's own style because of so many trends. I think it's also becoming harder to distinguish personal style because of all the similarities in the trends that fashion houses follow. You could also argue that a trend came from someone's personal style. Although they're different, they need each other.

  2. I thought this post was really interesting because I didn't know the difference between them. I’ve always thought they were similar in some way. I have no sense of style or fashion, so this gives me an idea of what I should focus on if I decide to change that.

  3. I think that style is sometimes hard to achieve, because people often try to follow trends rather than curating things that personally fit your own style. Style is so interesting to me, because each person has their own individual style that fits them perfectly.

  4. Loved this read! It's easy to dress fashionable with the accessibility to so many different brands and "dupes" of items but having style (I think) is supposed to be a direct association with one's personality. While the ever-changing trends can make it difficult to invest in a personal wardrobe, I think if you buy one stylish staple piece you can find so many ways to rock it. If you feel confident in yourself and your outfits that's the most important thing!
